Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini
Samsung have created a mini-me again in the guise of the Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini (they must have watched the same movie). It has many of the bells and whistles of its larger brother, but some are a lower specification, which is to be expected.
The phone is reasonably light at a mere 120g, and sports a PayPal certified finger print sensor. It is also IP7 certified against dust and water, which means it is waterproof up to one meter and can remain under water for 30 minutes. Personally, I wouldn’t like to test that promise.
Screen
We have a super AMOLED touch screen at 4.5” with a resolution of 720 x 1280 that gives us 326 ppi. The screen makes use of Corning Gorillaglass 3 and Samsung’s Touchwiz user interface,
This is all driven by a 1.4 GHz quadcore processor and a 2100mAh battery. You have 1.5 GB of RAM and a microSD slot to increase storage by another 64GB.
Additional bits and pieces include Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n support, dual band, Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA), Wi-Fi direct and Wi-Fi hotspot. It also has version 4 of Bluetooth up its smaller sleeve.
Camera
The phone has an 8MP number on the front, that sounds a bit low to me, but it provides a resolution of 3264 x 2448 pixels, so take that! The camera has an LED flash, geo-tagging, touch focus, face detection, Hyper Dynamic Imaging (HDR) and panorama. Video comes in with 1080p HD and 30 FPS. There is also a 2.1MP camera on the front of the phone that can also take videos at 1080p and 30 FPS.
Engine
The operating system is 4.4.2 KitKat, which is to be expected, and we have an array of sensors to play with, including an accelerometer, a gyro, compass and a heart rate monitor. The browser is thankfully written in HTML5 (no more java or flash to virus up your day). We also have a GPS with A-GPS and GLONASS support.
Lastly, it has a range of pre-installed goodness for your edification and delight – An organiser, video/image editor, a document viewer, Google search, Google maps, Gmail, YouTube, Google calendar, Google Talk, Picasa and voice memo, dial and commands.
Anybody would think that Google built this phone, but it is a refreshing change not to have Samsung’s bloatware on the phone. Lastly, we have Swype predictive text built into the keyboard, and the Swype app is very good indeed.
To buy or not to buy...
Should you buy one? Well, the jury’s out on that one. Wait for the forthcoming revues from various famous people before making up your mind. In addition, you might be better off with a Galaxy S3.
